Chapter 9

Longarm was getting worried and restless after a week in old Santa Fe. Sure, he was enjoying Ruby’s company, and after that first day they’d moved into the same room, but where were Jude and the other Haskill men?

“Maybe,” Longarm said to Ruby late one sunny morning, “I’ve misjudged this thing and they went straight west over the Rocky Mountains out of Denver. If they did, I’ve made a real miscalculation.”

Ruby was sitting beside a fountain in the enclosed patio admiring the flowers and garden. “It’s so beautiful in here that I wish we could stay forever. The town of Santa Fe itself is nice, but I feel like we’re in a world of our own right here in this garden.”

“It is relaxing,” Longarm agreed, “but sitting here enjoying the flowers and fountain isn’t getting anything done. Jude and his brothers should have been in Santa Fe by now.”

“What else can be done? We’ve gone to see the local marshal every day and he’s got his deputies watching for Jude.”

“We could ride north toward Raton Pass,” Longarm said. “Maybe intercept the Haskills.”

“But if they came south, you said that they’d almost surely pass through Santa Fe.”

“I know,” Longarm replied, “but I’m not one to sit around. I’m a man who craves action.”

Ruby smiled. “I thought I was giving you all the action you could handle day and night.”

Longarm’s face relaxed. “Believe me, you are. I’ve no complaints about that, but we can’t afford to wait much longer. If they’ve already turned west and headed for Durango or Cortez, we could wait here forever and never catch them.”

“It’s a long way back up to Raton Pass.”

“Yeah,” he said, “too far to backtrack.”

Ruby came over to stand beside him. “Let’s give it one or two more days and then ride straight for Arizona.”

“Thats sounds good to me,” Longarm said. “But I’m feeling kind of cooped up and I’d like to get out of town for a while. Let’s ask Juan’s wife to pack us a picnic lunch. We can ride up in the hills and spend the day.”

“I’d like that very much.”

So it was decided, and Longarm immediately felt in better spirits. He never had been one to sit around more than a few days, and their horses could also use the exercise.
